How a Sunday morning run club keeps its streak alive

It meets in the same spot, at the same hour, in whatever weather the week decides to serve up. The secret, members say, is that showing up is the whole point.

The rules are simple enough to fit on a sign, and there is no sign. Meet at the same corner, at the same hour, every Sunday. Run whatever distance you are good for. Wait for the people behind you at the top of the hill.

Groups like this tend to survive on routine rather than ambition. Nobody is chasing a time. The pace is set by whoever is having the hardest week, and the coffee afterwards is treated as a fixed part of the workout rather than a reward for finishing it.

New runners are the usual test of whether a club is as welcoming as it says it is. This one passes largely because it has never bothered to advertise — people arrive because somebody they know brought them.

The streak, whatever it is currently up to, is not really the point. But it does mean that on any given Sunday morning, in any given weather, there is somewhere to be.
